Following the outcry over a beauty contest held in the female sector of Nigerian prisons Kirikiri, Lagos, in which murder suspect Chidinma Ojukwu was crowned Miss Cell 2022, the facility’s controller, Mrs Lizzie Ekpendu, has been reassigned.
On March 8, 2022, Ojukwu, the suspected murder suspect of Super TV’s Chief Executive Officer, Usifo Ataga, was proclaimed ‘Miss Cell 2022’ at a beauty pageant held by the prison authorities to honor International Women’s Day.
The pageant drew varied reactions across the country, with some claiming that it was inappropriate for a murder suspect, while others claiming that the prison administration had reserved the right to hold a pageant for all convicts.
Despite the fact that the prison authorities defended their actions, Vanguard exclusively learned that the female prisons comptroller, Mrs Ekpendu, was redeployed last week as a result of the incident.
Mrs Ekpendu was sent to the Lagos Command Headquarters in Alagbon, Ikoyi, according to a source who did not want his name used since he was not authorized to talk on the topic.
“I can report that Mrs Ekpendu, the Comptroller of the Kirikiri Female Prison, has been sent to the Lagos Command Headquarters in Ikoyi.” Another senior female officer has taken her position.”
