One Person Kill£d, Scores Injured In Borno IDP Camp As Fire Destroys Facility

One person has been confirmed dead and dozens others wounded after fire broke out at IDP Camp in Muna Elbawawi, near Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

It was gathered that the incident occured at about 1.30 pm on Friday when a fire suspected to have emanated from a cooking point escalated to other areas.

Reports says the fire also razed down over one hundred shelters, leaving hundreds of IDPs stranded and displaced from the camp.

Confirming the incident, the Information Officer of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, North East Zonal Office, Mallam Abdulkadir Ibrahim said, NEMA team and Fire Service Personnel promptly responded and saved the situation from further destruction.

He said in a press statement on Friday that, “The fire incident is suspected to have been caused by cooking fire from one of the shelters.

“Officials of NEMA, Nigerian Red Cross Society and other stakeholders promptly responded, and administered first aid to the injured victims, as we regretted that one life was lost in the inferno”.
