A Yobe-based Islamic scholar identified as Sheikh Goni Aisami-Gashua has been killed by gunmen at Jajimaji, the headquarters of Karasuwa local government council of the state.
It was gathered that the cleric was travelling from Gashua to Kano when he was followed in a bus by the attackers.
A source who is familiar with the incident stated that the incident happened around 10am at Jajimaji, a distance of less than 30 kilometers from Gashua, the hometown of the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.
The source said the scholar was shot dead in his car and a red Honda car (continue discussion) was taken away by the assailants before they were later apprehended by the police.
The ugly development was confirmed in a statement by the police spokesman in the state, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim.
He said suspects wielding AK-47 rifles have been arrested in connection with the incident and are in police custody.
Sheikh Goni Aismani was buried today in Gashua town of Yobe State amid tears by thousands of his students, family members as well as associates.
