Buhari Launches First Crude Oil Drilling Project In Northern Nigeria (Photos)

President Muhammadu Buhari has formally launched the Kolmani Integrated Development Project, (KIPRO), on the border of the states of Bauchi and Gombe.

Today, November 22, Buhari oversaw the groundbreaking ceremony for Kolmani Oil Prospecting Leases (OPL) 809 and 810 at the Kolmani field site, two years after commercial-scale oil was discovered in the area. It would be the first oil drilling site in the area.

Oil was discovered in commercial volume in the region after NNPC launched a search in some Northern States in 2016.

Kolmani fields hold over a billion crude oil reserve, which could significantly raise Nigeria’s oil reserve that has not grown in 10 years.

The flag-off ceremony which was held on Tuesday was attended by several dignitaries, including Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The first phase of the project is expected to entail an in-situ oil refinery with a capacity of up to 120, 000 barrels per day, a gas processing plant of up to 500 million standard cubic feet per day, a power plant of up to 300MW capacity, and a fertiliser plant of 2,500 tons per day.
