South African Father Accused Of Killing His Daughter After He ‘Slapped’ Her During A Dispute

A 58-year-old man has been accused of murdering his 24-year-old daughter after allegedly ‘slapping’ her in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

On September 12, 2022, the suspect, Fannie Mtshali, made his initial appearance before the Ogies Magistrate’s Court.

According to a statement released by Brig Selvy Mohlala, spokesman for the Mpumalanga Police, an altercation between Fannie Mtshali and his daughter, Simphiwe, took place in Phola, close to Witbank, on Saturday night at around 11 p.m.

Mtshali “slapped her” during the physical altercation, which resulted in her losing consciousness.

Police and paramedics were rushed to the scene, according to Mohlala, but when they arrived the woman had already been declared dead. Immediately after the attack, Mtshali was taken into custody.

Mtshali was placed back in custody, and the case was tabled until September 19 so that a formal bail application could be made.

In response to the incident, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, the Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, expressed his sadness over the girl’s passing and disappointment in how the incident played out.

“Though children should be brought up to be disciplined however parents should avoid using violence. Parents are the ones that must protect their children as well as their families. Gender-Based-Violence remains classified as a pandemic and we cannot turn a blind eye on this dreadful scourge” added the General.
